Are there any good Civil War songs that I could use in my history presentation?
My presentation is kindof long, so I could use a few songs. I don’t want anything too annoying, like the song War by Edwin Starr. I so far have the songs Hero of War by Rise Against, which I love for the presentation. And Civil War by Guns n Roses, and yes, I know that’s a song for Vietnam haha. I just really need some better idea, please help!

There is the Union marching song, ""The Battle Hymn of the Republic"; and the Confederate anthem "Dixie"… Elvis Presley put those two together, along with a spiritual "All My Trials", in his American Trilogy, which is played at Stone Mountain.

There are few songs that I know of for the Union, but you have "Battle Cry of Freedom" and "When Johnny Comes Marching Home"… When Johnny Comes Marching Home is a good song to portray the end of the Civil War. You also have the Cold Mountain soundtrack…

Most of my list will be country, since that is music I listen to most, and most will be from a Confederate POV. This is for two reasons: the musicians are from the South and the losing side has a more romantic, "lost cause" nature. But, here we go…

The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down — Joan Baez and the Band, among others
God Bless Robert E. Lee — Johnny Cash

There is a great album called the Last Day at Gettysburg that has some great songs on it, including

Two Little Boys — about two brothers who grow up to fight in the Civil War, one for the gray and one for the blue
He Walked all the Way Home — great song about the feelings of a defeated Southern soldier walking home following the surrender.
The Legend of the Rebel Soldier — about a Southern solider dying in a Northern POW camp
The Last Time — a song about a Southern soldier ridding off to join the war

The Last Time:
Momma made my uniform, Sewed a stripe on the shoulder
Papa wanted my company flag, Bring it back when it’s over
Jenny came to say goodbye, she said she would wait for me
On my stallion I sat high, Leaving Tennessee

This is the last time you’ll see Jenny
That’s what the cottonwood Keeps saying to me
‘Cause the last time, You’ll see Jenny
Will be the last time, You’ll see Tennessee

He Walked All the Way Home:
In the grim and final hour of the War Between the States
He had enough of dying, all the grief that he could take
From the Appomattox Courthouse, where the deed was sadly done
There was no place left for him to go but home

And he walked all the way home to Southampton County
Carrying all he owned just to try to forget
Wearing sadness like a mantle for the friends he lost in vain
He walked all the way home to start his life again

In the end he knew the reasons, but so many had been lost
For years to come the fallen would sleep beneath the cross
What he held in angry silence, time could never burn away
It was just the saddest price he’d ever have to pay

Well The Battle Hymn of the Republic springs to mind. If you want more modern stuff though, check out the song War by Lucero. Also American Hearts by A.A. Bondy. Those two will probably change your life, musically speaking. Cheers!

Why don’t you look up songs that the soldiers and civilians who actually lived through the civil war sang and played?

All of that music is well out of copyright, it’s just a matter of finding modern recordings that you can legitimately use.

To buy CW music: http://www.civilwarmusicstore.com/

Plenty of songs/music/soundtracks you can listen to here, some with the words; including youtube videos:

Here’s the song-index page for the site above: http://www.civilwarmusic.net/songs.php

Here’s a site with tunes, but without the words: http://pdmusic.org/civilwar.html

No offence, but with the huge popularity of Civil War re-enacting, you should have thought of this approach yourself! :-D

Have fun!

Hero of War pertains to the Anti-Iraq War movement. Nothing in it even remotely pertains to the Civil War. Why would you love that song for a history presentation?

The two primary songs of the era were Battle Hymn of the Republic (Union) and Dixie (Confederacy).

I would use historic songs that actually pertain to your presentation, otherwise you might as well start putting N Sync and Britney Spears in there.
